Suzuki Cello Teacher | TitirangI & Mt Eden

Rachel Wells

Hi, I’m Rachel. I began learning the cello at the age of four, and it has been a joyful part of my life ever since. I studied with Euan Murdoch and Coral Boguda, and later gained my ATCL with James Tennant.Alongside teaching, I perform professionally as a member of The Black Quartet and have performed with ensembles including the Auckland Chamber Orchestra, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and Bach Musica. I have also recorded and performed with artists such as Trinity Roots, Broods, Lawrence Arabia, Hayley Westenra, Jimmy Barnes, and Lauryn Hill.As a mother of two young children, I understand the rhythm of family life. My studio is calm, organised, and encouraging, with a focus on helping children enjoy the process of learning the cello and building confidence along the way.I am currently training as a Suzuki teacher through the New Zealand Suzuki Institute.

The Suzuki Method

Dr. Shinichi Suzuki founded the Suzuki Method, often called the mother-tongue method, after observing that every child learns to speak their native language naturally and with ease. He believed that music could be learned in the same way. When children are surrounded by encouragement, listening, and consistent support, they can develop musical ability just as they develop language.Suzuki believed that every child has the potential to learn to play music beautifully when given the right environment. His goal was not only to develop skilled musicians, but also to nurture confident, sensitive, and kind human beings through the study of music.Suzuki learning is a partnership between the teacher, parent, and child. Parents attend lessons and become an important part of their child’s learning at home. I work closely with families so that practice feels positive, manageable, and enjoyable, helping children build confidence and a lifelong love of music. Read more here.
